HI everyone, my mother\'s maiden name was Armer, she was born in 1923, the last but one of 13 children, none of whom survive now.
The family story was that the Armers in Lancashire are descended from 2 brothers who came down from Scotland with The Old Pretender (James III of Scotland, Bonnie Prince Charlie\'s father) in attempt to conquer England. They were defeated at the Battle of Preston in 1715 but the 2 brothers deserted (some prisoners were taken and some of the rebel army were hanged or transported).
I have got as far back as William Armer born 1786 and am gradually getting further. If the story is true, the Armers would have been Roman Catholics and my next step is to look at a census of all Catholics in Lancashire in 1767 - I\'m going to London in April to look at the original document!
All very exciting. Sally
